About a year ago I came across the 'jelly roll race quilt tops' phenomenon that swept the world (well, maybe not swept and maybe not the world!). I made a quilt top with my two jelly rolls (which by now were sitting in the drawer with some friends. They are still sitting there!) and then promptly put the quilt top in a drawer!
Basted and partly quilted (of course, the quilting is on the under side!). |
In a previous post I blogged about participating in Beth's Drop and Give Me Twenty. This is my current project as a participant of Beth's challenge. I am looking forward to completing it (though the free motion quilting is taking me a while!). Look at that orange lantern fabric - how cute is that? I am really enjoying the fresh colours of this quilt.
the colours are so vibrent xx hope to see it all soon xx
ReplyDeleteI really like these colours together - such a happy quilt!
DeleteGorgeous colours! Excuse my ignorance, but what is a jelly roll?? And what are you making?? It looks like a cushion cover, or am I only seeing part of it??
ReplyDeleteA jelly roll is a bundle of pre cut fabric strips - 2.5" x width of fabric. There are usually 42 strips in each roll (a roll because they are rolled up!) and they are taken from a fabric range so that they're all coordinated. There are also Honey Buns (1.5" strips), Charm Squares (5" squares), Layer Cakes (10" squares) and other pre cut fabric 'packs'. Have a look at this website: http://www.wantitneeditquilt.com.au/
DeleteI'm making a lap quilt - it's folded up at the moment. Will try and finish it quickly so that I can take a photo of the entire thing.
I think that's what I need, pre-cut stuff with fabrics that match!! When I eventually get around to making my quilt, I think this will be the way to go :-)
DeleteHi, found you thru your link up on Simple Sew. I have a jelly roll that I've had for a few years as well, hehe. I think your jelly roll quilt is beautiful! Great colors, I love orange. Good for you for pulling it out and working on it. Super job! Oh and I'm your newest follower. ;D

Thanks so much Jodi. I adore pre cuts! I (cough) have a few jelly rolls now that I need to do something with. I do love seeing them all neatly rolled up though! Do you have a blog?
DeleteGorgeous quilt Jeneta! and you are right.... Spotlight DID have jelly rolls! obviously there is a new buyer, as the pre-cuts seem to have disappeared! The jelly roll race quilts were everywhere for a time! and still I didn't make one:-( even though I too have jelly rolls waiting patiently in a drawer!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Gotta love those drawers!! I did notice that Spotlight have started stocking some precut shapes - hexies, squares and triangles are what I remember (though the value is not as great as a charm pack or jelly roll!).
DeleteYour quilt is fun! I'm still yet to try a jelly roll race, ill have a go one day..,
ReplyDeleteIt is a fun line of fabric isn't it! I thought the simple structure of this quilt top (along with the busyness of the fabric) would be great for practising some free motion quilting. I think I'm getting better!
DeleteHI, popping over from the Blogaversary Party, Good luck with a win and thank you stopping by..New memeber&&& ME
ReplyDeleteI love the colours! Jelly rolls are so much fun. I have a few sitting on my shelf that insisted they had to come home with me from the shop.... I'm feeling inspired looking at your quilt top.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how fabric can convince you like that! There are some great jelly roll patterns out there. I have borrowed a few great jelly roll quilt books from my local library. Actually, I keep borrowing them, only to return them without actually having made any of them!
DeleteCan't get these gorgeous colours out of my head!! I have a cousin who is having a baby in Aug/Sept and was thinking of making her a baby quilt. Might have to go Spotlight shopping with you to help me choose fabric!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteCareful Gab - once you start quilting you'll be hooked!! Have a look at this little quilt: http://retromummy.com/2012/12/15/a-quilt-for-keiras-teacher/ I think charm packs are fantastic - no cutting, the top is put together quickly and the simplicity is quite stunning. If you pick up a couple of charm packs on sale you can sew up a small quilt for about $25 - $30. Of course, the Spotlight option is also fun - particularly if they have some great clearance fabrics! If you think you'd like to do the charm pack option I'd recommend Quilt Jane:

I usually get batting from Textile Traders when they have their buy 2 get 1 free offer running (is that on right now?).
Let me know if you decide to go ahead - I'm there!!
My problem is time ... but I suppose you just have to prioritise!! I have a list of things I have to finish off THEN I would definitely like to make this for her ... very cute and doesn't look to hard, thanks!! I hate having projects half started, and I have a few of those at the moment!!
ReplyDeleteOK, how's this for a plan ... I will finish off current projects now, and by the time she's found out if it's going to be a boy or girl, I'll be free to get started and to choose a suitable colour theme. Great in theory at least!!
Good idea. I'll try and match your finishes with some of my unfinished projects. What do you think you'll finish first? I just need to hand sew the binding on the bright citrus quilt. Will take me a few days!
DeleteChristmas photo album first! Then finish mum's bag (like yours but in burgandy). In between, I have a few worky-type projects I'm in the middle of. Tell Nicole that the photos arrived yesterday, but disk was corrupt (doh!), so I have to wait for a new copy before emailing everyone.
